About

Artist Statement

I’m always trying to find connections between things. That art is the juxtaposition of a lot of things that seem unrelated but add up to something recognizable.”    -Pat Metheny

Sweets, text, and vintage photos of interesting people are all things that intrigue me. The colors and shapes of candy, as well as its packaging, has such power over our senses. I am constantly exploring the impact of masterful marketing versus our body’s physical response as sources of our desire for sugar.  The thoughtful utilization of text also plays a role in my work. The use of words and letters is an ever-present means of communicating. Most recently I have incorporated interesting vintage images of figures. Photos from the past evoke a sense of questioning about the lives and personalities of those who came before us. My work strives to combine all of these seemingly unrelated elements to create a world in which their relationships become connected in a new and somewhat believable space.

Bio

A Dallas, Texas native, Stacy Crabill moved east at a young age and claimed North Carolina as her home. With a love of the outdoors as well as the arts, her diverse interests are reflected in the varied subjects and themes of her art.

Crabill received a BFA in painting at the East Carolina University School of Art and Design, where she was highly influenced by Paul Hartley, Leland Wallin, Michael Ehlbeck and Ray Elmore. Her work process mimics that of a collage artist- creating a hierarchy of elements on paper, then arranging and rearranging to find a working composition. She sometimes works on the floor, at the table, on countertops or at her easel, until eventually the drawing is transferred to the work surface. It is here that the conversation begins- continuously responding to the last brushstrokes, elements or marks on the surface.

Beekeeping, gardening, running, raising chickens, a dog, and two teenagers are other passions of the artist. Like her art, she attempts to find a balance in these seemingly unrelated interests.

The artist currently works at her home studio in rural Hillsborough, North Carolina.
